The land of the free…

So here we are in the land of religious freedom and we have folks up in arms because someone wants to take an oath on the Koran.

So the NY Times had an article about the criticism that some congressman was giving another because he wanted to take an oath on the Koran:

http://www.nytimes.com/2006/12/21/us/21koran.html (NY Times so you might want BugMeNot) Then a bunch of Virgina rednecks jumped up yapping about how the country is getting taken over because one muslim is taking a ceremonial (not LEGAL) oath on a Koran (although ideally people would take oaths on things that are valuable to them). Then there were some decent opinions…

“It may seem unfair that the United States allows Muslims to participate freely in public life while many Muslim societies deny the same rights to people of other faiths. But in this country we believe that freedom of religion protects everybody, including those who are in the majority today” 1

“More than five years after the Sept. 11 attacks, paranoia remains thick.” 2

I think its pretty funny that people are more concerned with who he prays to than what policies he will be voting for. Maybe if people paid a little bit more attention to those types of qualities we wouldn’t still be occupying a nation after paving the way for their Civil War.

Why do we give so much attention to attention starved rednecks? And why do these people represent a segment of this nations population? . . .another reason to stay the hell out of Virginia.
